What's For Dinner?

15% Off All First-Time Pet Food Purchases!

This month I want to address the issues surrounding the massive pet food recall and what it all means to you and your pet. Menu Foods produces pet foods for a large number of the brands you are familiar with. Apparently some toxin contaminated their source of wheat gluten, which is an ingredient used in many pet goods. This toxin was first thought to be a rodenticide (rat poison) but the final supposition has not been verified. Whatever the toxin, it led to kidney disease and ultimately kidney failure and death in many beloved family pets. The initial recall did not affect the dry kibble products, just canned and packaged moist products for both dogs and cats.

Thankfully we have not identified and furry family members in our practice suffering from kidney failure due to diet. We like to think it is because most of our clients are well informed on pet food choices. However, because of this incident I thought it was a good time to discuss with you what good and safe products are out there for your pet to eat.

As you all know, we recommend dry kibble diets only, unless there is a specific medical condition that calls for a prescription moist food diet. We carry Hill’s products, both their over-the-counter and full line of prescription diets. Hill’s only makes one product with wheat gluten, and that is the feline prescription diet M/D Dry, which is primarily for diabetic cats or for cats needing to lose weight. To be extra cautions, Hill’s did a voluntary recall on M/D only because of the wheat gluten content, although no troubles were reported with the food. Without fail, Hill’s products are among the very premium on the market—high quality and very safe. Our faith in this product has been well-founded and we will continue to recommend it heartily.

As an alternative for those of you who would prefer to put your four-legged family member on a natural or organic diet, I have also ordered dog and cat food from Natura Pet Products. It is a fine line of food and their philosophy is based on six tenets:

We will carry Natura’s Innova line of dog and cat food, as well as Karma, the only government-certified organic dog food on the market. In addition, we will be carrying treats from both the Innova and Karma lines.

To my knowledge and to the best we can determine, we will be the only clinic in Des Moines carrying these food lines.  We hope that by offering you and your pets these top-of-the-line products along with the excellent selection if Hill’s foods, you know that we have your pet’s best interests at heart. I know Midge and Lola can’t wait to try some of the new food, and I intend to put them on it immediately! To encourage you to try these new Natura products, please enjoy 15% off your first Natura purchase, and be sure to let us know how it was received by the ultimate critic: your pet!
