In This Issue:
Heartworm Season
Food Recalls, Heartworms, Mosquitoes, Oh My!

As many of you know, there has been a major food recall of both dog and cat pet foods. Initially it was due to a toxin, Melamine, found in contaminated wheat gluten which was purchased from China. Now, in addition to the foods with toxic wheat gluten, there has been an additional recall for many pet foods with contaminated rice. Please check available websites or call the office to see if your food is on any recall lists.

As I wrote in last month’s Paws & Reflect, in addition to our full line of Hill’s products we have started carrying food from a company called Natura. We are carrying their dog food called Karma, which is the only government-certified organic dry dog food currently available. We are also carrying their product line called EVO, which is available for both dogs and cats and is a totally grain-free line of foods, so neither wheat nor rice are a problem. We recommend either the Hill’s Science Diet or Natura’s grain-free line for our clients. Current food choices from Natura that we provide include:

We will continue to monitor these recalls and keep our clients informed. Also, we will take 15% off all first-time purchases of EVO dog or cat foods. Call the office, 727-5757, with any questions.

The other topic of importance this month is that the flea, tick, and heartworm season is upon us. With all of the recent flooding and areas with standing water, the mosquito season will probably be worse than normal. Remember: mosquitoes transmit heartworm disease. If you haven’t already done so, call the office for an appointment to test your dogs for heartworm and initiate the monthly preventative called Heartgard. Heartgard is an easy-to-use, once-per-month chewable treat that dogs readily eat.

Also, we can’t forget our feline patients. Cats are also prone to heartworm disease and should be on a preventative medicine as well. We use Revolution in cats, which is a monthly topical applied to the skin. Revolution also prevents fleas, ticks, ear mites, and the most common intestinal parasites. Unlike dogs, we do NOT recommend yearly heartworm tests for cats—we simply start the preventative.

Now that the flea and tick season is here, remember that if you buy a six pack of Advantix, you’ll get a seventh month free! That’s seven months—enough to keep your dog protected until the end of the flea season!

Whether you own dogs or cats, due to the amount of moisture this year, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes will thrive and have a banner year, so it’s a good idea to be prepared. So drop in or give us a call at 727-5757 for an appointment, and we’ll help you and your pet leave heartworms high and dry!
